He grew up on the farm near St. Thomas, ND and graduated from St. Thomas High School.  On July 22, 1955, he was united in marriage to Betty Lou McMartin at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Crystal, ND.  After their marriage they continued to live and farm west of St.Thomas.

When Fred retired from farming, they lived in St. Thomas and spent winters at Lake Fairways in North Fort Myers, FL. They traveled in their motorhome to all 48 states while heading south to Florida and back north in the spring. After selling their home in St. Thomas, summers were spent at Fish Hook Lake near Park Rapids, MN.

Fred loved to golf and had 5 hole-in-ones at Lake Fairways.  He and Betty loved to entertain and was known for his prime rib on the grill! He also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins.
